Christian Pacifists Face Court : Melbourne Indymedia

This week Christian pacifists and other peace activists have convergened on Alice Springs to support activists in court who conducted a “citizens inspection” of Pine Gap in December last year.

The Four activists, calling themselves “Chrisitans Against ALL Terrorism” are Jim Dowling, Bryan Law, Adele Goldie and Donna Mulhearn. They are the first people ever to be tried under the Defence (Special Undertakings) Act 1952. This legislation, written to supress spies and saberturres in the cold war era carries with it maximum penalites of seven years prison.

Tuesday represented the first stage of the trial of the Pine Gap 4, which consisted of legal argument surrounding the the Prosecution's use of the Defence Special Undertakings Act.

The crux of the submission by the defence was that the Crown had not proved that Pine Gap defends the interests of the Commonwealth against external agression and therefore the defendants should be acquitted of the charges under the Defence (Special Undertakings) Act (DSU Act). The defence Counsel, Rowena Orr, appeared by videolink from Melbourne and was outstanding in her grasp of the complexities of these issues.

From Rowena it was heard that the DSU Act limits a fundamental right of freedom, and therefore there must be very stringent tests applied this law. The Crown on the other hand argued that the land is ‘private’ and therefore private property rights are paramount. A heckler in the court loudly whispered that it is Anangu land, and all this talk of private property was ridiculous.

Today the court was closed to the public as the four challenged a supression order that was placed on them, without their foreknowledge, in a Darwin court. Today the secret order was confirmed, including being forbidden to discuss any contents of the order.

On both days a colorful procession of about 30 people (both locals and interstate visitors) accompanied the accused to court. A silent vigil reflected the solemn nature of the issues at stake. Delegates of the National Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Catholic Commission, here to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Pope's visit, have joined the supporters on the marches and in court. During procession reactions from the passer-bys varied. One woman mouthed the worlds “blessings to you”, while another man heckled with “thank God for the Gap”. Some Christians conducting a play for what appeared to be evangelical purposes were overheard to say “they should just be preaching Jesus” – ironic because that’s exactly what the accused state they are doing.

Federal police officers have been strongly present during all the activities of the group. They have met defendents and supporters as they arrived at the airport, taken photos outside the court house, and at times followed people around town.

The accused return to court on Thursday 12th of October for mention of all the matters discussed this week.

Activists are preparing for an afternoon of Action at Pine Gap on Saturday. They are also pleased to have the company of Ciaron O'Reilly who has recently been acquitted by an Irish jury for over $2million damage to a US airplane at Shannon airport.

The trial of two Oxford peace activists who attempted to disarm B52 bombers on their way to Iraq is taking place all this week. Toby Olditch and Phil Pritchard went into Fairford airbase just two days before the planes were used, hoping to disable the bombers and thus save civilian lives in Iraq and inspire others to action.

They were arrested before reaching the planes but have gone on to fight a high-profile legal battle, using their case to challenge the legality of the war and raise awareness. The upshot of this has been that various courts, up to and including the House of Lords, spinelessly (but predictably) refusing to allow arguments about the legality of the war. The legal argument for the trial now focuses on Phil and Toby's reasonable belief that they were acting to prevent war crimes.

Support at court is very welcome during the trial, either to come inside or with banners etc outside; Bristol Crown Court is on Small Street, off Corn Street, in Bristol town centre. Check the trial blog for the latest updates.

Margaret Jones and Paul Milling's trial for a similiar action resulted in a hung jury recently and they are awaiting a re-trial.

This vandal's main attack is as follows:

* Registration of legitimate looking websites, frequently the same with different TLDs (—.com, —.net, —.biz, —.info, —.name, etc). EG. "stephenhawkingsuniverse.com"
* Redirecting those sites via a IFRAME to legit websites. "http://www.pbs.org/wnet/hawking/html/home.html"
* Waiting a while...
* Adding ad frames to his sites while still redirecting, or just redirecting the sites to the domain he was trying to spamdex all along.

As can be seen, this noxious attack takes some effort to notice beyond just following links. Running WHOIS on domains added to targeted articles is recommended. (Example for "stephenhawkingsuniverse.com")

In this past the domains redirected to revisions of the Wikipedia articles that contained his linkspam, possibly in attempt to boost search engine rankings.

Most recently, his domains now redirect to the bindiirwin.com which is most likely a temporary forum hosted at http://projectorion.proboards28.com/index.cgi.

Some other traits:

* Impersonation of legitimate sites. EG. The above attack on PBS/Hawking, Universe Today, etc.
* Malice toward, and personal attacks against other users, especially those who revert his linkspam (example, (examples))

It's the US military that is reluctant to publish details on continuing violence in Iraq - for years the figures have been reported by independent organisations bitterly opposed to the Coalition, and to the Israeli and US states.

As the sun set over the Alice Spring desert tonight, five people chose not to obey police direction to move off the road and have been arrested. This follows a blockade where about 40 people sat on the main road to Pine Gap spy base.

The arrests came at the end of an afternoon of protest activities by about 60 local and interstate activists. The action coincides with the first stage of the trial of four Christian peace activists who broke into Pine Gap last year and face seven years in prison.

The five strong activists are Tracey Makamae (43), teacher from Yeppoon in Central Queensland, Sam Lard (22) from New Zealand, Edward Cranwick (56) from Adelaide, Jamie Ford (28) from Alice Springs, and Carl Johnston (22) also from Alice Springs. were arrested and we believe have been charged with loitering.

The colourful and moving demonstration included a solemn ritual for the dead of Iraq which involved reading the names of those who have died as civilians, soldiers, contractors and journalists from various countries. The names were then placed on a large wooden cross.

A group of children waved streamers and offered security staff guaring the main gate local wildflowers. There were some security staff that broke their stoney silence to smile at the children, but none took the flowers.

The Citizens inspection team then ‘re-named’ the defence facility “Pine Gap Terror Base” with a banner hung over the main sign. The banner read: “Pine Gap Terror Base – in proud subservience to the USA Civilians Bombed while U wait – back into the Stone Age.” Sponsored by Ratheon.

The group then moved onto the road and asked to be allowed to inspect the base. They were met with silence. About 10 minutes later, the group were told that someone with the authority to give or deny permission to leave the base would be there soon. While the group waited on the road, the gathering was addressed by irish/Australian activist, Ciaron O’reilly who was recently acquitted of disabling a US military plan causing $2.5million damage.

There was also colorful street theater depicting the role of Raytheon, a military company that maintains Pine Gap. When the head of security finally arrived, he was asked whether he would allow the group entry, and to give his view of the base. He replied with 'no', and refused to comment further.

The group then threw streamers and wool accross the road, creating a web which blocked the road. About 40 people sat for over an hour before a direction to move was issued.

Tracey, one of the arrestees said “I’m sick of being lied to, the US and Australian Governments are lying to us and we’ve swallowed it and ignored the issue of Pine Gap for too long"

“I act to make the Australian and US government aware that I won’t be lied to anymore – I won’t roll over, I won’t ignore the hundreds of civilians, men, women and children who have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. How can intelligent Australians plead ignorance any longer.

Carl Johnston (22) from Alice Springs says he is sick of not having a voice says “If Australia was being bombed would we want Iraqis to do the same, I think so”.

Edward (56yrs) is a former US Government employee who wants to preserve the America of Martin Luther King, Lincoln and Jefferson and not Bush insanity.

Sam Land (22) is a Catholic Worker from New Zealand. He said that “as a Christian and Catholic Worker my conscience will not longer let me stand aside and let Pine Gap continue to play a significant role in this war”.

I find it absure that you have the nerve to call yourself Christians Against All Terrorism in one breath and then express support for terrorists in Ireland in the next breath. I.e. You support the Raytheon 9 some of which are members of the Real Ira and the notorious INLA. Both terror groups are still responsible for murders, extortion, drug running and punishment beatings Northern Ireland. You need to change you name to "Christians Against Almost All Terrorism But Some Terrorists May Be Acceptable Subject To Agreement".

Either be Anti Terrorist or remove it from your title. YOu can't cherry pick.
