Thousands of Aboriginal people from around Australia are coming to the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne to highlight the continuing injustices of Government-enforced destruction of Indigenous societies.

In a parallel cultural event billed "The Stolenwealth Games," protesters are gathering in peaceful gathering on Boon Wurrong Land known as Kings Domain in the city (Map Ref 2F J8) for the next two weeks under the banner of "The Black GST" - standing for Genocide, Sovereignty and Treaty.

Black GST Elder Robbie Thorpe said the history of the Commonwealth in oppressing Indigenous people across the world united many Games nations in a common experience of exploitation over generations.

Protest leaders are inviting all people, including sports team members and international representatives in Melbourne for the Games, "to visit the park site to pay respect to country, have a cup of tea and discuss issues concerning Aboriginal people today."

"The attempted and actual genocide of Aboriginal people in Australia has not extinguished our sovereign rights in our own country, but the Australian Government and legal system continues to ignore this. Native Title laws and the Reconciliation process have been inadequate to redress this fundamental injustice," said Robbie.

"We need a new awareness of Indigenous rights among Australians and people everywhere that the Stolenwealth Games can help deliver."

Events will include a protest march and book launchings to highlight the stealing of Aboriginal land and the lives lost as a result of the invasion of Australia by British Commonwealth forces. A sacred fire will be kept alive at the park during all activities. Artistic and other events will emphasise Indigenous survival and success.

Everyone is welcome to our fire of peace, healing and justice.

At Australia's last Commonwealth Games in Brisbane in 1982; Aboriginal protests drew international attention to that increased pressure on both State and Federal Governments to reform civil rights and Native Title laws.
