HUNGER STRIKE LUCIANO CARRASCO
19-08-2003

BECAUSE WE ARE ALIVE, WE SAY NO TO OBLIVION AND NO TO FORGIVENESS

On the 18th of August at 10:30AM, in the head quarters of the CHRISTIAN LEFT OF CHILE, Compañia 2404 - Santiago CHILE, an indefinite hunger strike commenced, organized by children of Missing Prisoners and Relatives of people executed during the dictatorship of Pinochet. Alexandra Benado, Ivan Carrasco, Natalia Chanfreau, Yuri Gaona, Fahra Nehgme, Juan José Parada, Michelle Retamal, Alberto Rodríguez, Daniela Taberna, Carolina Valdes, Bárbara Vergara, Pablo Villagra, Eduardo Ziede and Liliana Salazar, inspired by the action of the son of the murdered journalist Jose Carrasco, who committed suicide last year, have initiated this Hunger Strike to protest against the Impunity Law being propelled by the government of Mr. Lagos.

This Impunity Law only favours those who committed horrible crimes and in no way will bring justice to those who have been waiting for so long. Very low sentences are being offered or total impunity in exchange for information. This 'exchange' is one of the central points of this law. Most of the murderers are still free and those in jail are detained in luxurious reclusion centers. This Impunity Law is an abuse, a farce and a macabre joke, this is not justice.
